About This Image

The Veil Nebula – Supernova Remnant in Cygnus ( NGC 6992, NGC 6995, and IC 1340) The Veil Nebula is the spectacular remains of a massive star that exploded as a supernova roughly 10,000–20,000 years ago. Located about 2,400 light-years away in Cygnus, the expanding shock wave now spans roughly 100 light-years across. This wide-field image captures much of the Veil complex, including the sweeping arcs of the Eastern and Western Veil. The delicate red and blue-green filaments are glowing gas energized as the ancient supernova shock wave plows through the surrounding interstellar medium. Hydrogen contributes strongly to the reddish emission, while doubly ionized oxygen produces the characteristic blue-green filaments.
