BAS · E.S. Fox Observatory
When is the Observatory open to the public?
Public observing happens on scheduled viewing nights only. See Events for dates and times. If you’re unsure, use Contact Us to ask about the next opportunity.
Is the Observatory staffed? Can I drop in anytime?
No. The Observatory is not continuously staffed. Access is only when BAS volunteers are present and with prior permission. Most programs run evenings and weekends.
How do I get to the Observatory?
Directions and a map are on Contact Us (look for E.S. Fox Observatory at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre near Oliphant).
How do we become BAS members?
Visit Join Us for membership options, benefits, and how to sign up.
Can BAS host a viewing event for my group or school?
Yes—send a note via Contact Us with preferred date(s), group size, age range, and any special needs. We’ll coordinate volunteers and confirm availability.
Visiting & What to Bring
Is there a cost to attend a public night?
Public nights are free; donations to support programming and maintenance are welcome (see Join Us → Donate).
What should I bring?
Dress warmly, bring a red-light flashlight (or cover a small flashlight with red cellophane), and avoid bright phone screens. Binoculars are great but not required.
Are children welcome?
Absolutely—our programs are family-friendly. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Are pets allowed?
For safety and dark-site etiquette, please leave pets at home (service animals excepted).
Is the site accessible?
Grounds are mostly level; some telescope stations require short walks on gravel. Tell us any accessibility needs via Contact Us so we can assist.
Weather, Cancellations & Safety
What if it’s cloudy or raining?
Events are weather-dependent. If skies won’t cooperate, we post updates on the Events page (and social if enabled). Some sessions may switch to indoor talks.
Do you cancel for cold or wind?
Yes—extreme conditions can damage equipment and aren’t safe for guests. Check Events before you travel.
Is there parking and lighting on site?
Yes, on-site parking is available. We use minimal lighting to protect night vision—please avoid headlights and bright phone screens in observing areas.
Telescopes, Cameras & Astrophotography
Do I need a telescope?
No. BAS provides instruments on public nights, and volunteers will help you observe.
Can I bring my own telescope or binoculars?
Yes! We’re happy to help you get started and offer quick alignment tips.
Can I take photos?
Handheld photos of the Moon through the eyepiece are often possible. For deep-sky imaging, please ask a volunteer about opportunities or our Astrophotography group.
