The Cocoon Galaxy, also known as NGC4490, is a distorted spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici. It is interacting gravitationally with its smaller companion galaxy, NGC 4485, and this close encounter has stretched and reshaped both galaxies. This interaction has triggered intense regions of new star formation, giving the galaxy its bright, irregular appearance. The Cocoon Galaxy is located approximately 25 million light-years from Earth and is a strong example of how galaxies evolve through gravitational encounters. 10.1 Hours of LRGB data
