The California Nebula is a large emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus, approximately 1,000 light-years from Earth. It earned its name from its striking resemblance to the outline of the state of California. Spanning roughly 100 light-years in length, it is one of the largest nebulae in the night sky, though its low surface brightness makes it a challenging visual object. The nebula glows in hydrogen-alpha light, energized primarily by the nearby bright star Xi Persei (Menkib). It is a popular target for astrophotographers, particularly with narrowband filters, which reveal its rich red and pink hydrogen emission in stunning detail.. This nebula reminds me of my honeymoon with my wife Jacqueline in 1987. We had a great time in the state of California for 3 weeks. One of my first targets getting into the hobby after a couple of months experience.
