Join the Bluewater Astronomical Society at the E.S. Fox Observatory for a special viewing of the partial lunar eclipse taking place on the night of Thursday, August 27, 2026, continuing into the early morning of Friday, August 28.
This will be a deep partial lunar eclipse, with most of the Full Moon passing through Earth’s umbral shadow. Near maximum eclipse, the Moon will appear mostly darkened, with a reddish or copper colour possible depending on sky conditions.
For the E.S. Fox Observatory area, the main eclipse timing is expected to be:
Penumbral eclipse begins: Thursday, August 27 — approximately 9:24 PM EDT
Partial eclipse begins: Thursday, August 27 — approximately 10:34 PM EDT
Maximum eclipse: Friday, August 28 — approximately 12:13 AM EDT
Partial eclipse ends: Friday, August 28 — approximately 1:52 AM EDT
Penumbral eclipse ends: Friday, August 28 — approximately 3:02 AM EDT
The most noticeable part of the eclipse will be the partial phase, from approximately 10:34 PM to 1:52 AM, with the best viewing near 12:13 AM.
BAS members will be on site to explain what is happening, answer questions, and provide telescope views where conditions allow. The eclipse can also be viewed with the unaided eye or binoculars.
All times are local Ontario time — Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
This event is weather dependent. Please check the BAS website and social media before attending for updates or cancellation notices.
