About This Image

Sh2-112 is an active stellar nursery in Cygnus, roughly 6,000–7,000 light-years away. Ultraviolet radiation from the massive O-type star BD+45 3216 ionizes the surrounding hydrogen and oxygen, while dark lanes of dense molecular dust carve dramatic structures through the glowing gas. The nebula forms part of a much larger filamentary molecular cloud containing hundreds of very young stars—evidence that star formation is still actively underway.
